What I have learned about my fire project.
What I have learned from my Fire Project and everything else throughout the year is how our idea of Social Justice connected to many situations; from current events we
talk about to how some things just do not add up, or just do not seem right at all. Yet people do not pay attention to the way corruption has its way of affecting everyone.
Before the Fire Project, we talked about what inspired us and what was our passion, which led up to this final project. Learning about the struggle of people and the
hardships they endure really made me think of what our school teaches us and what they try to prepare us for once we graduate. Social Justice has made me think about
what do we want to 'out there' in the real world. and how we can help those who struggle to help themselves.
As we got closer to the beginning of our Fire Projects, I felt very passionate about the topic of air pollution. From what I learned in all my Science classes and what I
learned in my other classes that talked about racism and how it works in many ways. I was able to make the connection that communities like Little Village, (where I live)
and Pilsen, which are both victims of environmental racism. This topic inspired me to teach others that many people are impacted by the pollution of power plants and yet
they make no changes that would help decrease the number of health issues that these power plants are responsible for. Over the year, I learned so much about air
pollution and what it does to people and I hope to continue spreading the knowledge because it is the only way we can keep ourselves critically aware of this and other
problems that our community faces. Making people aware allows us to make changes around the world but it all starts with a positive change at home first.
